What will a
       new dachshund
                puppy cost?

The base price for most of the more common colors
of dachshunds such as reds and black/tans is $625 (companion price) with $25 being refunded* if the puppy is spayed or neutered prior to 7 months of age. Other less common shades and patterns are priced higher and are listed when the puppies are born and displayed on my website.

Quite often I get emails or calls from new owner
wannabes that start their contact with me stating
that they cannot afford the price of a dachshund puppy.  "We just want a pet" is usually how it starts and this statement concerns me.

What the statement "we just want a pet"  usually means is that they want a cheap dog.  My response to these people is that if they just want a good pet and cannot afford the price of a quality, AKC registered, micro-chipped puppy then please adopt a puppy or an older dachshund from a local animal shelter or from The Dachshund Rescue at http://www.drwp.net/florida.html .  The dogs that are available at these locations usually have had their yearly immunizations, they are altered, tested for heartworms and have been placed on an initial heartworm prevention.  Price-wise these dogs are a fantastic financial deal and they will be WONDERFUL PETS!

Please know that the cost of a puppy does not stop with the purchase of the puppy.  Three weeks after a puppy is purchased, it will need to be seen by a licensed veterinarian for its second set of immunizations.  Three weeks after that visit to the vet, the puppy will need to return to the veterinarian again for its third set of immunizations.  These boosters are a must!  If the initial cost of a puppy cannot be afforded,  then that leads me to believe that mandatory medical costs cannot be afforded for the puppy as well.

Aside from the immunizations, ALL DOGS MUST BE PLACED ON HEARTWORM PREVENTION and it is not cheap.  If an owner skips the prevention, worms collect in the dog's heart and eventually kill it.  It suffers.  There is treatment once a dog has heartworm but it is costly.  The price of heartworm treatment is about equivalent to the price of what 10 years of heartworm prevention would have been if it had been purchased responsibly in the first place.

The puppy/dog will also need parasite prevention such as Frontline for fleas and ticks and this is not cheap either.  The dogs must have it!  Some owners think that they can forego this prevention.  Would they want to go through a day scratching at lice on their head?  No.  So why would anyone think that their best friend should suffer with these parasites?
If the problem is allowed to exist, then the problem spreads throughout the house carpets, rugs and floors and human legs and beds...

The concerns listed above are just the preventative medical.  What's going to happen the new puppy if it gets hurt?  Just to walk through the door of the animal emergency clinic costs $85 ($40 for the emergency fee and $45 for the examination fee).
